Portable awnings provide instant shade when needed yet pulled out of the way when not in use. Both styles of retractable awnings – lateral arm and side arm – can extend to a variety of projections. These types of awnings using the simple method of winding the fabric body around a fixed bar to control the awning projection.

The side arm portable awnings have tensioned arms, or bars, running parallel to the awning fabric. This style provides access under the awning from all sides. Side arm awnings using long poles, mounted low on the wall under the awning, to keep up the front part of the extended awning.

The arms of the lateral arm portable awnings push the front bar of the awning away from the wall. In the retracted position, the awning fabric is wrapped around a bar mounted close to the wall. The bar connects to a locking tool. To extend the awning, turning the user ratchet gear to unwind the fabric from the bar. As the fabric is rolled, the tense arms pushing against the front bar hold the fabric body stretched tight. To retract the awning, the user reverses rotation of the locking gear, winding the fabric back around the rear rod and forces the arms back against the wall.
